The Business of Running Your Life
Part 1 – Knowing What to Do With My Life
One of the biggest problems I had in life was deciding what to do with mine. Then when I had my own family, I had no idea what to do with a family. Most of us, which is normal, have no idea what to do with our lives much less a family. Looking back, I certainly wish I had help with this. I had questions like, what should we accomplish if anything? Where should we live? What do we do? Should we have goals? What are we here for? If you have questions like these, this next series, I’m calling “The Business of Running Your Life” is for you. It will help create a path and guide you into finding your own in this vast, yet complicated place we call the world.
Enough introductions, we have a lot of ground to cover and it’s best that we jump right in, so that you can start reaping the benefits. It’s time you stopped drifting through life and start living the life you desire. With that said, let’s start with figuring out what to do with your life.
How does one know what to do with one’s life?
In my exploration of this question, I’ve found that ordinary people are waiting on someone to tell them what to do. This is the biggest problem. For example, when you advanced from elementary to junior high, someone gave you a set of instructions on what to expect next. Even in high school, you had choices of classes to take, but it generally came from a list of courses someone handed you. In college, the list got bigger, but still, it was provided for you. In the armed services, the steps are pretty clear and directed, for the most part, by another. However, what no one ever told you or showed you is that you get to make of your life what you “want”. Listen, you shouldn’t just happen upon your life or be surprised at its ending; so we’re going to help you make of your life what you “want” of it . I put this word in quotes because I need to come back to it later.
Now to circle back to answering the original question…it’s up to you to decide what to do with your life instead of letting others decide for us. I’ve concluded that each individual should view their life as their business or their very own company. Once you do that, you open the door to make something out of your life. What is it you can sell? What service can you provide? What can you do well that can produce an income? What enjoyment does the business offer? You’re the business. Your life is the business you own, what are you going to do with your business? You get to make your business, your life, successful.
Your Life is Not What You Do
I wish when you graduated from high school instead of a diploma, they handed you your very own business license. That would be a sobering moment. What would you do with a business you owned? That’s exactly how you should view the life you’ve been given. This is exactly what we wish to help you develop, a business plan for your life. We want to help in giving you an edge on knowing what you should be doing with your life.
Trust me it’s not about where you work, even though that’s a part of it. Most of us view our life by what we do on a job. I’m a teacher, a dentist, a bus driver, or retail sales associate. We’ve allowed those around us to set those titles. It’s far too limited. You don’t spend all day being any of this. When you view your life as your own business, you see teaching as a function of the business. You provide a service to students by which you teach. As a dentist, you help people with their hygiene, this is a part of what you do. As a bus driver, you provide transportation to others to help them reach their destination. As a sales associate, you assist women, men and children to look their best. Having these jobs is just a small piece of what your business does. And boy, I can’t wait to begin showing you how to make doing these pieces even better.
Today is your Friday and you need to know what to do with the life you have.
Your life is your business!
