How to Create a Vision Statement And Why?
The Marketing Campaign For Your Life – Part 2
How we plan to promote what and who we are?
A vision statement is a statement that projects a future image of who you’re becoming. This statement can be a simple sentence or a document. At any rate, it’s for you and your family to keep your focus on who you wish to become. It has little to do with “the now” but everything to do with “the later.”
Every business has this thing called a “vision statement” and since your life is a business, you know what that means? Before I tell you, you need a “vision statement”, we’ll need to define what that means.
Let’s begin with a definition that you can understand.
A “vision statement” is a short description of your roadmap. It’s a description of your plan. It’s a statement that you (and your family) draft that sets your direction. Why is this important? Let me explain.
“Where there is no vision [focus, attention, or forethought], the people perish [in the area of no vision]…” – bible.com/1/pro.29.18.kjv
Without a vision [statement], you die, you are destroyed, you pass away, or you end up in ruin. Let me give you an example.
If you have no vision for your education, you’ll stop right where you are.
No vision for your marriage, you can pretty much guarantee that marriage will end in ruin.
No vision for your career, it’s not going anywhere.
Anything that ends well, had a vision for it’s successful ending. What are you envisioning?
The Thought or Concept:
You need a “vision statement” if you want to have a course or destination you wish to reach with your life. The word vision means to have sight. What are you seeing for your life? Vision is that statement that makes faith possible. If you can see your dreams, then you see the things that fuels faith that makes it possible.
The Practice:
Now let’s talk about how to create your “vision statement.”
- The one sentence vision statement. If you’ve never created one, start with one sentence to make it easy. What is it that you see yourself doing that you’re not currently doing? What’s your desire? Write it down. This is the first step in making it happen. Once you write it down, it’s like starting up your GPS app. Once the coordinates have been entered, your life will begin to travel the path to reach that destination. Without it, the GPS for life can only display where you are.
- The vision narrative. When you’ve gotten the one sentence approach down, it’s time to move on to the narrative. Break it down into its logical pieces. Then begin describing the pieces as you see them. If you need help, get with a friend and perform this exercise verbally so that you can hear yourself speaking the words you need to put to paper. The narrative will explain in more detail what you desire to see.
- The working vision plan. Because I like planning, I take the narrative a little further. I create a working binder which is a part of our “Family Plan” to add as much detail as possible. This binder gives me the place to store and collect all the ideas that come once I’ve completed the “vision statement” and the “vision narrative.” Trust me when I say this, when you write your plans down, things start to happen at a surprisingly quick pace.
Your “vision statement” is important to keep your family together, motivated, and shielded from distractions. Why not start one today to see where it will take you?
Today is Friday!
You have a destination you’d like to reach, but you will never reach it without a plan and your plan needs some vision. You need to be able to see it before you see it. Remember your life, your business, is what you make of it. More importantly it’s what you see of it.
Until next Friday, share this web-post with a friend who’s trying to connect with their destiny, drafting a vision statement is their next logical step. Thanks for visiting Kerry A. Clark & Co.
