Five Habits That Will Keep You From Losing Your Family’s Plans
A Plan for Your Family to Use – Part 1
I can recall a number of seminars I’ve attended as part of a work requirement or office personnel training. You too might have similar experiences where your company decided to train their employees. You find yourself at an offsite hotel meeting room with people you know, faces you’re familiar with, and some you don’t. Some days you begin the session with some type of icebreaker to get things moving. During the meeting, the trainer goes through lessons followed by breakout sessions where you have such activities as role playing and group exercises. Some people like the exercises while half don’t. Here’s what I want to bring your attention to.
After the seminars are over, you’ve gone through the motions, and returned to your office, do you know what happens to that expensive training session? Each day that passes you forget the material you’ve learned. Here’s why? What you don’t use, you lose. Have you ever experienced this? Sure you have. That’s what we don’t want to happen with what you’ve learned in our Family Plan lessons.
The Thought or Concept:
Always remember what you have been taught, and don’t let go of it. Keep all that you have learned; it is the most important thing in life.

Since we don’t want anyone to lose what they’ve learned from these lessons, Pamela and I have decided to include this lesson. A lesson on how to use the family plan after you’ve gone through learning what each part is and what it makes available for you and your family. Keep in mind that the number one way to achieve a goal is not by simply having a goal, but rather by making a fail-proof system to make progress towards the goal daily. We call that a system for achieving success.
The Practice:
With that said, I would like to give you five thoughts you can use to help you put in the work of planning and seeing your family achieve its plans.
- Use it as a working set of documents.
Put it out of your head; your family planning is never finished. You will forever be making plans that impact your family, your life, your business. Get in the habit of making updates which include, but don’t limit yourself, to this: milestones, images, vision boards, accomplishments, ideas, thoughts, and your progress. - Use it for family dinner discussions.
One of the best ways to make your family plan user friendly is to keep it on your dinner table. Every time you and your family enjoy a meal together use a page from it as a topic of discussion. We’ve actually made it a habit to discuss the business of our family without having to have the physical binder present. Each day we have discussions on current family projects, their updates, as well as our future plans. - Use it as your number one prayer outline.
I should have placed this last, but this one is for my fellow people of faith. If this is not you, skip this one and proceed to number four. When you struggle to have conversation to pray, use your family plan. Turn to a page and discuss your plans with God. Your family plan gives you an outline to discuss everything in your world with Him. And this use alone is worth you getting a binder for yourself. Click here. One more thing I’d like to mention here is that most of the best ideas for our family plan come from using it as our personal prayer guide. - Use it as your year-end review.
I think I’ve made mention of this before, but as a practice have a family year-end review. Have a dedicated time each month or each week to make updates to it so that at the end of the year you can look back and see what you’ve accomplished and/or what you need to accomplish. - Use it to set New Year’s goals for your family.
Since your family plan is your operating system for your family use it to make adjustments. Review it often, add images, ideas from others, and even more detail as you review regularly. It’s your family’s plan. Remember, no plan and you plan to fail. Because you’re serious about having a family that’s unlike any other family, you have to do what normal families don’t. That’s to plan, set goals, and make habits to see to it that the goals get done.
Anytime you implement something new, you need a system that ensures you don’t lose what you’ve learned. Growth can only be demonstrated by the habits you create or those that are changed by what you’ve learned. In this lesson we’ve discussed five ways we suggest you use the Family Plan. Use these five or make up five of your own, just as long as you use it to make the family you’ve always dreamed of having.
Question: What use of the family plan do you find the most enjoyable for you and your family?
