{"id":2223,"date":"2018-12-21T03:00:01","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T09:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/?p=2223"},"modified":"2018-12-20T23:25:44","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T05:25:44","slug":"christmas-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/christmas-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"The Christmas Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you write a special Christmas message for a decade or more, you wonder what can you say this Christmas. \u00a0This was my thinking until I had this idea on how to make my Christmas memorable. Let me explain and hopefully you can do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why an experience?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we celebrated Christmas a few years ago, I asked the family to go around the table and recall gifts from their childhood that they could remember getting (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nolongercommon.com\/christs-big-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Santa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0To my surprise, we couldn\u2019t remember as many gifts as we thought we could. \u00a0Instead, each person shared a memory they held onto and may have included a gift. \u00a0It was the experience that they remembered most, not the actual gift. If you know him, he&#8217;s a straight-shooter. \u00a0The point is this; I remember what I saw and the experience to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When younger others make the experience for us.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here&#8217;s another, I remember the special <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rtecx.com\/gum-drop-tree\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gum-drop tree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our grandmother would make for us each year. \u00a0There was no way I\u2019d ever eat one of these gum-drops stuck to the branches of the homemade tree, but the experience has lasted throughout my lifetime and well after hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One more, I recall my grand-aunt Kaye (Aunt Peewee) she\u2019d give us a Christmas package each year and in the wrapping we\u2019d find a pack of tube-socks. \u00a0At the time, we didn\u2019t want tube-socks for Christmas, but because she gave them to us we wore them at some point during the year. While the gift was strange to us then, it\u2019s the experience that we cherish and remember many years later.. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>As we age, it becomes less of an experience because the lack of others\u2019 intervention.<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see as we become adults, we have to take on more and more responsibility to making Christmas experiences. \u00a0The gift-giving is but a small and many times insignificant part of Christmas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few ways we make an experience of Christmas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>A Girls Sleepover.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Tamia planned a Christmas sleepover for a few of her twelve-year-old girlfriends. \u00a0Pamela had gifts wrapped for them to open when they arrived. They enjoyed each other&#8217;s company. \u00a0As a finale they selected names and went shopping so that they could exchange semi-secret gifts. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/executing-a-plan-for-a-great-christmas\/\"><b>Move Christmas<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Because we have a blend of family members, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/executing-a-plan-for-a-great-christmas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we move Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up one day. \u00a0We celebrate early so that everyone will get to celebrate with the other sides of their families on Christmas day. \u00a0We do Christmas twice!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>My tea cakes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Only one time a year will I prepare my famous tea cakes. \u00a0I actually hate that they love them. Not. It\u2019s a part of Christmas now along with my breakfast ambrosia. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Family Communion.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0We plan for an intimate family gathering. \u00a0\u00a0During this time we have a special reading of the real Christmas story along with a candlelit communion time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Christmas Service.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0We all attend the special <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofthehighlands.com\/christmas#\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlands Christmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> service together as a family. \u00a0The group continues to grow as we now have friends who are joining for this special Christmas experience. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today is Friday! \u00a0(The Friday before Christmas)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s these actions that make Christmas special. \u00a0Stop worrying about having the right gifts, but have the right experience. \u00a0Making experiences or memories, as my brother would say, is the goal to having a great Christmas. \u00a0You still have time to prepare for making Christmas an experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share this with all your friends&#8230;that will make for an experience. \u00a0From my family to yours, Merry Christmas!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#c7ced4;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#E1E8EE;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;border-color:#ffffff;color:#000000;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/familyplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Family Plan Binder<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/familyplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1025\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Family-Plan-Cover-e1493399146525.png?resize=115%2C149\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a> is available now! <p><\/p>\nOur team has worked very hard putting it together.
