Family reunions, we\u2019ll leave that topic for another time. Erica loves to connect family members. &nbsp;Well, her love inspired or ignited a small fire within me. It made me think more about my own family and my heritage; so we made the decision to do something about it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>The people upon whose shoulders you stand are very important.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/play-to-your-strengths\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our personal annual marriage retreats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pamela and I visited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biltmore.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biltmore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it was a bucket-list item we\u2019ve been meaning to do for years. &nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biltmore.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biltmore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shares the history of the Vanderbilt family. &nbsp;In the Biltmore Village, there\u2019s an exhibit that displays the Vanderbilt&#8217;s family tree and at the very top is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anderson_Cooper\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson Cooper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CNN anchor. &nbsp;What must it feel like to have such heritage and ancestry? &nbsp;Well there\u2019s only one way to know that feeling, start one or add to one. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Tools to Document My Own Family Tree<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t long after visiting The Biltmore that I went on a search for a way to put our family&#8217;s tree together. &nbsp;My thoughts were on our daughter, Tamia, her children, and her grandchildren. Just like everything else we do, I needed a plan to accomplish this. &nbsp;Let me share a few of the requirements I needed in a tool for our family tree. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Digital.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;Of course it needed to be digital. &nbsp;I\u2019ve tried paper family trees and there were far too many limitations which resulted in me quitting before I\u2019d get started good.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Scalability.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;Because families today aren\u2019t as linear as families of yesterday, we needed a family tree app that\u2019s able to expand (branch off) in any and as many directions as possible. &nbsp;I want to be able to hand it off to any family member and they can run with their segment if they want to.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Shareable.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;The ability to share this family tree is a must. &nbsp;We didn\u2019t want the family tree to be lost with me. &nbsp;So we\u2019ve included details about the family tree in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/product\/the-family-plan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &nbsp;&nbsp;That way it\u2019s not out of sight or out of mind. &nbsp;We will leave our records of where we\u2019ve maintained our family\u2019s tree for the generations that come behind us.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After trialing and reviewing a number of family tree apps out there, we landed on \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyecho.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family Echo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. &nbsp;It\u2019s free and it met our requirements.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before I end this episode, I have <\/span><\/i><b><i>a bonus tip<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for you.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>Hidden family records can be found in obituaries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve learned to find value in obituaries, they can be a very valuable guide to putting together a family tree. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those of you who are unfamiliar with \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_in_America\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black in America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d culture, not to be confused with African-American culture, obituaries are a very important piece to funeral services. &nbsp;They capture history. They often expose truths that only become visible when someone passes. At any rate, it\u2019s these obituraries that I use to update our family\u2019s tree. &nbsp;Each time I attend a funeral I use the obituary to update our the tree. I find the value in everything I possibly can and have found a love for funeral obituaries and the content in which they leave us. &nbsp;Whatever the strategy, use whatever you can to build your family\u2019s history.
