{"id":2764,"date":"2019-09-20T03:00:22","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T08:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/?p=2764"},"modified":"2019-09-27T09:22:26","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T14:22:26","slug":"welcome-the-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/welcome-the-rain\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome the Rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our Very First Focus Statement &#8211; &#8220;Welcome the Rain&#8221;<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living A Life of Focus &#8211; Part 2<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Welcome the Rain&#8221; was the 1st book my wife ever gave me as I made the return to my information systems and technology career many years ago.\u00a0 I used this book as a guide to help me build a team of the most successful people I could. The title itself makes for some questionable thinking as most people frown upon rainy days at least so were my thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before I knew that having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/right-focus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a practice, I&#8217;d started it by accident with this book.\u00a0 I&#8217;d reflect over its content each Friday so that I could alter my attitude and perspective as well as that of the team I served.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2765 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=400%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=400%2C400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=600%2C600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190920-TIF-SM-Welcome-the-Rain.png?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The Thought or Concept:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><b>Flip the Sail<br \/>\n<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not the way the wind blows, it&#8217;s how you set your sails.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; Unknown<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My wife and I, who had zero sailing experience, decided to set sail on a catamaran.\u00a0 We were enjoying the ride until the shore was quite some distance away and we couldn&#8217;t decipher which of the small buildings was our hotel.\u00a0 It seemed as if the swells were getting bigger and bigger.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We realized, as fright set in, it was time to turn around and head back.\u00a0 However, we had no idea how to get the direction of the wind to change. As I noticed the look of terror in my wife&#8217;s eyes, I decided to do something, the only thing I could <\/span><b>do&#8211;something different<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We managed to completely redirect the sails.\u00a0 We flipped the sail around and to our surprise, we had done what was needed to get moving in the desired direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might not be able to control the wind [what\u2019s uncontrollable], but you can control the direction of your sails [your attitude and response to the uncontrollable situation].\u00a0 That&#8217;s what this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/right-focus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">focus statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taught us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;d like to take a moment to share our takeaways gained during this time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #808080;\">The Practice:<br \/>\n<\/span><b>Takeaway 1 &#8211;<\/b> <b>Our perspectives and attitudes are the reflections of those who we are around.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two people can be impacted by the very same experience, yet one will say \u201cWhy me? Why today?\u201d while the other will say \u201cWhat a wonderful turn of events!\u00a0 We are so blessed!\u201d What&#8217;s tragic is that most of us would rather respond \u201cWhy me? Why today?\u201d It\u2019s common, but do we have to be common? The problem with common is that no one questions it.\u00a0 If you have never heard anyone say in a situation \u201cWhat a wonderful turn of events! We are so blessed!\u201d, all you\u2019re left with, is what you\u2019ve heard or seen in others your entire life which might only be \u201cWhy me? Why today?&#8221;\u00a0 Our perspectives and attitudes are the reflections of those we are around and we are most often around common human-beings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaway 2 &#8211; Finding reasons to dance in the rain.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you ever ask for more rain to fall?\u00a0 Most of us will answer &#8220;no&#8221;. We use phrases like&#8230;will it ever stop raining.\u00a0 I hate rainy days. &#8220;When it rains, it pours.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you ever considered the beauty that can be found in rain or rainy days?\u00a0 Try visiting a place that goes without rain for a month at a time and you&#8217;ll find that performing a rain dance will become your favorite past time.\u00a0 You might even find yourself dancing in the rain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using rain as a metaphor in this case, reveals an important truth about how we see things.\u00a0 In other words, our perspective plays a critical and vital part in how we see the world around us.\u00a0 &#8220;Welcome the Rain&#8221; is one of the best books I&#8217;ve ever read; it teaches a person how to see things from a better perspective while helping you benefit from it.\u00a0 Soon you will go from hating rainy days, to finding reasons to dance in the rain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaway 3 &#8211; Have the right perspective.<br \/>\n<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world. \u2013 Helen Keller<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First let&#8217;s define the word bravery and patient to make sure we can get a clear understanding of what Helen Keller is saying.\u00a0 Bravery is taking a step into the unknown or uncertain, taking a risk. Patient is waiting for an outcome calmly. Now let&#8217;s take a second look at this same quote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We could never learn to [take an uncertain or risky step] and [calmly await the outcome] if there were only joy in the world. \u2013 Helen Keller<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quote is about having the right perspective.\u00a0 Bravery can only exist when a problem is present. If you had only joy, why would we need to learn to be brave and patient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaway 4 &#8211; Think About Such Things<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul, the founder of The Christian Church of Philippi, is recorded having said these words, &#8220;Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -if anything is excellent or praiseworthy &#8211; think about such things.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To me what makes this statement so powerful is what he doesn&#8217;t say and what the statement implies. \u00a0 Check it out. Because we don&#8217;t normally think in alignment with Paul&#8217;s suggestion means we naturally think like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">false<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whatever is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not respectful<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whatever is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrong<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whatever is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selfish<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whatever is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low caliber or beneath oneself<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> -if anything is <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sub-par<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worth murmuring and complaining<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; think about such things.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that reveals the true nature of what&#8217;s found in the hearts and minds of ordinary people.\u00a0 It takes work to turn this type thinking around; it takes a focus statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaway 5 &#8211; <\/b><b>Your life is the sum total of all<\/b> <b>YOUR<\/b> <b>choices.<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLife is what you choose to make of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life is what we have chosen.\u00a0 Your life is the sum total of all<\/span> <b>YOUR<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choices.\u00a0 If you choose to be negative, then you have a negative life.\u00a0 If you chose to live with drama, then your life is filled with drama.\u00a0 It is all your choice. Never forget that the choice is yours and you have a right to choose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLife is what you choose to make of it.\u201d\u00a0 It represents the best life<\/span> <b>YOU<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could make on your own.\u00a0 No one else can take responsibility for your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quote \u201cYour life is a gift, now go make it count!\u201d by Michael Hyatt says that your life is a gift to you.\u00a0 Will you accept this gift? How can you make it count for something? What are you doing to make it count? <\/span><b>You see <\/b><b>your life is the one you chose?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaway 6 &#8211; Opportunity to choose our attitudes.<br \/>\n<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving the right mindset makes all the difference in the world. \u201d \u2013 Eric Harvey<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The right mindset.\u00a0 The right mindset in any situation makes the situation different.\u00a0 Approach your situation from a different angle and see what possibilities lie in front of you. \u00a0 Step away from it and see it from another&#8217;s perspective and see how it changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make a different world.\u00a0 The world you see is a direct reflection of how you choose to see it.\u00a0 You can choose to choose differently. I&#8217;ve heard it said that you see people the way that you are.\u00a0 So in order to see one differently will require you to become different.
