It taught us that saying \u201cyes\u201d to something means we&#8217;re saying \u201cno\u201d to everything else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your trade-off?<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common behavior will allow one to be distracted from doing what\u2019s important for something else.\u00a0 Normal people trade the most important, for the least important. Have you ever thought about how much of your time is being taken hostage by others?\u00a0 Maybe you don\u2019t see it this way. So then, let me open your eyes to this thought. Let\u2019s say you work in an office setting with offices and cubicles. Anytime a person walks up to your desk and ask you to do a task you did not plan on doing, is your time being taken hostage?\u00a0 In the corporate environment this happens everyday, all day. What they are asking you to do is take on their assignment and take the focus off the things that should have your priority. It\u2019s always a trade-off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A successful life is a series of trade-offs.&#8221; &#8211; John Maxwell<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask yourself, what am I trading during this moment, during this time?\u00a0 When we allow others to take our time, our moments, one hour, even our day, what we have just done is made a trade.\u00a0 We\u2019ve traded what we want to do for what someone else wants us to do. This means every time you\u2019re presented with a request, you must ask the question, what am I trading?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I want to trade my time for what\u2019s being presented to me?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I need to be doing something else?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I need to be watching an hour of my favorite show?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I really going to trade \u201cthat\u201d for what I\u2019m doing now?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I going to trade-off this momentary satisfaction for a greater future?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I going to, as the Old Testament would say, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bible.com\/bible\/116\/GEN.25.27-34NLT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take the bowl of stew for something that is going to cost me my future?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #808080;\">The Practice:<br \/>\n<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For everything you gain, you must give up something.&#8221; &#8211; John Maxwell<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are four lessons we can learn from making a trade-off decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Every \u201cyes\u201d is a \u201cno\u201d to something else.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might not realize this, but you should, every time you say \u201cyes\u201d to something, you\u2019re saying \u201cno\u201d to something else.\u00a0 When you say \u201cyes\u201d to something that\u2019s not important to you, you say \u201cno\u201d to something that is. You must also consider that one \u201cyes\u201d is hundreds of \u201cno\u2019s\u201d.\u00a0 What are you really saying \u201cno\u201d to when you say \u201cyes?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The default response is to say \u201cyes\u201d to the wrong activities. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The default response is always \u201cyes\u201d to the things that don\u2019t matter.\u00a0 This is normal. Most (51% or better) never consider that they are making a trade-off of something.\u00a0 They may work long hours (saying \u201cyes\u201d to the job), but never consider that means \u201cno\u201d to their children or spouse.\u00a0 They may be saying \u201cyes\u201d to that extra drink, but are saying \u201cno\u201d to getting out of a financial bind. The point is, it\u2019s normal to say yes to all the wrong things without considering what you might be saying \u201cno\u201d to.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A conscious effort must be made to make the best exchange.<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This trade-off thinking takes some effort.\u00a0 It just doesn\u2019t happen on its on. You have to make yourself consider what trade-offs you\u2019re making when you make a decision.\u00a0 Don\u2019t for one minute think this comes naturally; it doesn\u2019t. It will take work. If it were easy or normal, everyone would be doing it, making the best trade-offs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Making a conscious exchange will cost you<\/strong><b>.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your decision to make a trade-off will cost you something.\u00a0 It may cost you some friends. It could cost you a promotion.\u00a0 It could cost you things that you\u2019d rather not see slip through your hands at the time, but in order to have the type of life you desire, this is what it takes.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Every choice becomes a sacrifice&#8221; &#8211; Law &amp; Order &#8211; SVU<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLeaders replace frustration with preparation; setback with vision; failure with drive.\u201d &#8211; Christopher Novak<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just look at this quote.\u00a0 An uncommon person trades frustration with preparation.\u00a0 An exceptional human-being will replace setback with vision.\u00a0 A person of excellence will exchange failure for drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today is Friday!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are you trading?\u00a0 Will you continue to sacrifice your most prized investments with trades that will cost you more than you\u2019re willing to pay in the long-run?\u00a0 It\u2019s time to change your trading strategy.
