{"id":326,"date":"2025-11-21T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kerryaclark.com\/?p=326"},"modified":"2025-11-21T08:31:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T14:31:40","slug":"clean-off-your-desk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kerryaclark.com\/blog\/clean-off-your-desk\/","title":{"rendered":"Clean Off Your Desk"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>No More Fires<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know it can be scary lifting up those pages and discovering the things you haven&#8217;t completed\u2026 the things that are overdue\u2026 the stuff you hoped had magically resolved themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honestly, it almost feels easier just to wait until the fire comes and deal with it then.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what if I told you this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You no longer have to have fires.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s what slowing your pace is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowing your pace requires that you clean off your desk daily\u2014but more importantly, that you clean it off on Friday. There are two major benefits to doing this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You become organized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (remember how good that used to feel?)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>You can put out fires before they ever start<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your desk has been talking to you all week. And I know for some of you, the word &#8220;piles&#8221; is an understatement\u2014you have mounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let me encourage you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most of the items in your stacks don&#8217;t require action anymore.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many have already been handled, expired, or simply no longer matter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>But some pages are fires waiting to happen. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know the ones\u2026 the things you haven&#8217;t done but should have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t let that stack sit there any longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do something with the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Process your stacks the same way you do your home mail:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sort and file<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what needs to be kept<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dispose of the junk<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Separate the items that require action<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These simple actions make you unlike the rest\u2014<\/span><b>uncommon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, exceptional in the way you work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Put Out the Fire Before It&#8217;s a Blaze<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under that stack\u2014and probably mixed throughout\u2014are fires just waiting to happen. There will always be fire-starters buried in paper. Normal people have good intentions about getting to them, but then reality shows up:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They get busy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They get distracted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And before they know it, here comes another piece of paper added to the pile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once another sheet is added, the previous one becomes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>out of sight, out of mind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, no matter how important or critical it is. Your stack isn&#8217;t going anywhere on its own. And it only grows further out of control the less time you spend getting it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Goal Is to No Longer Have Stacks<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My goal is simple: <\/span><b>no stacks on my desk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I make it a priority to process my stacks because in my role, I refuse to become a bottleneck for the work my team depends on. I use a simple rule\u2014one that has saved me countless hours and countless fires:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The One-Touch Rule.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handle each piece of paper (or request, task, or email) one time.
