There’s a lot that can be done in a year. Where does one start as the New Year approaches?
Most have what I call “starting-itus”. This is where you try to cram everything you wish to do for the New Year into the 1st few weeks of the year.
So back to the question, where do I start as the New Year approaches? I’d like to give you a few pointers as to how we get off to a great start and pace ourselves in our New Year.
Give yourself a starting point.
The easiest assessment you can make is where to start. You know where you are currently. You might not like it. You may not have accomplished what you planned or dreamed of accomplishing this past year, but you know where you ended up. Start here. This is your starting point. Own it.
Set an endpoint.
Now that you own the starting point, which is last year’s actual endpoint, it’s time to set a New Year’s endpoint. Where would you like to be at the end of the New Year? “Where” isn’t a location unless your goal is to move. “Where” simply means what would you (I) like to see (accomplish). Write it down and make plans around it.
Don’t slip backwards.
I’ve read a lot of articles and gained insight from many sources on goal setting and planning, but I can’t recall anyone ever mentioning this in the process. “Don’t slip backwards.” What I mean by this is don’t fall short of your starting point. No matter what you do don’t end up falling short of where you started. Always move beyond the starting point; this is called progress. And be proud of the steps you’re making. Any step that goes beyond your starting point is a great achievement.
Set a focus statement.
You need one phrase, word, or statement that you can say to yourself everyday. Post it in a place where you’re sure to see, on your bathroom mirror, the dashboard of your car, or even the home screen of a digital device. This focus statement is like a trigger that gets your mind fixed on a destination so that everyday you’re moving towards your goal. Our focus statement for the New Year is “Stop Talking Start Doing.” I’d be honored if you shared this phrase with me, but if you choose another that’s perfectly fine with me. Create your own for you and your family, but by all means have a focus for the New Year.
Your New Year begins with your plans. No plan, you’ll begin and end your next year the same way you did your previous year.
Today is Friday!
In fact, it’s the last Friday of the year, how will you begin your next year? Will you once again leave it to chance or will you do what the uncommon do, make something happen? Let’s not do next year like we did this year; let’s do it better. Happy New Year!
