Your home can’t run itself on its own, although most of the world around tries. They try their best to run it on autopilot for many reasons: (1) they don’t know that it can’t, (2) they would rather avoid the work involved with running their home, (3) most think if they ignore it long enough the problem might just go away and (4) they don’t know how because no one ever taught them. I like the latter and that’s what my website is all about, teaching you how to run the business called “your life”. Today, we will discuss the departments that can be found in your home, who’s running them and why you need to give these departments your attention.
I bet you’re wondering is he for-real; departments in our home and life? Yes, I am. Just like companies have departments (i.e. marketing, finance, and facilities), so does your life and your home. Instead of going into more detail about this concept, let me just start by sharing the departments, Pamela and I have found in our home.
Executive Administration: Who are the decision makers, advisors, mentors and overseers of your life? It might sound simple and you are probably thinking that you (and your spouse) are the decision makers, but what’s the plan if the two of you can’t agree? What happens when you have a decision you need to make, but are uncertain which way to go? Defining these things is very important and removes confusion and opportunities for arguments from your life.
Accounting and Fiscal Department: How you manage your resources. Not everyone in the relationship is good at adding and subtracting. Maybe your children are better at keeping track of the resources. Managing money is the biggest issue most homes and relationships experience, mainly because no one is heading the department.
Facilities: How you maintain your dwelling. What plans do you have for your possessions, like your home, vehicles and toys? How does what you have play into the plans that you and your spouse (and family) have? Does what you have support the big picture for your lives, your business? Did you buy an expensive car when you could have sent you or your child to college?
Office administration: How you keep your records and important dates? Every household uses a method to store its records….even if it’s the junk drawer in the kitchen. Have you ever considered improving this storage of the items to be more effective and efficient for your family? No! Of course not because no one has ever pushed you to consider such. That’s what I’m here for. What if you can easily find those important documents you need during tax time? What if you could put your hands on 3 months worth of bills for verifying your credibility?
Production and Development department: What you do and how you produce streams of income? Why are you working? What work should you be doing? Does your current job support the mission of your family? Is what you currently do in the way of what your family desires most? These are just a few questions that you should answer. Just thinking about such questions places you on a trajectory for a new existence, a better existence. Find out how your life gets better when you define how you want to produce and develop in that area.
Marketing, public relations and creative department: What are you here for and how do you promote it. This department should probably be one of the first. Define why your family exists. How do you promote your values and how do you want to be seen and remembered? You’re currently writing the answers to these questions as you live your lives, why not be intentional about it. Decide beforehand and create the life you want others to see.
H.R. (Human Resources), and growth & development: How you care for your family. Everyone has a plan on how they care for their family, but do you have plans for how much better you want to care for your family? What’s the plan to take your family where you truly want it to go? You can take your family to a place it’s never been before.
Legacy (Legal/Political) department: What are your legal needs, taxes, rights, and voting goals? As we have recently gone through the 2016 election to select the president of the United States, having a plan for voting and how we handle the outcome is vital. What are saying to your children? What do you desire your children to take away? Are you paying the right taxes? Do you have the best deductions? Are you involved in the voting process for more than just the big elections? Don’t just accept life the way it is, have a plan to be involved in your society. Having a plan is the key to having the life you designed.
This concludes the list of departments Pamela and I have for our home.
Do you have departments that aren’t being managed so therefore you aren’t seeing the results you desire? Start putting your attention in these areas and see how you too can achieve results like that of the most successful companies.
Your home can and should run better than any business you’ve ever encountered. It’s your home and you have a vested interest in seeing to it that you and your family succeed. Not only that, you have what it takes to achieve every goal you can ever dream of and I’m here to take you on the journey of finding out how.
Are you ready to run your home, your business? What would you and your family like to achieve together? Leave me a comment below.
