Stop Being the Problem. Be the Solution

The Choice Is Simpler Than You Think

Most people spend their lives talking about problems. Next-level people spend their lives creating solutions.

That’s one of the biggest differences between average and uncommon people. The average person focuses on what went wrong, who caused it, why it happened, and how unfair it is. The uncommon person eventually gets to a different question: What are we going to do about it?

It’s easy to get stuck in problem mode. In fact, most people don’t even realize they’re there. They don’t call it problem-focused thinking. They call it being realistic. They call it venting. They call it explaining the situation. But if we’re honest, much of what passes for normal conversation is simply complaining, making excuses, and rehearsing problems that never move us any closer to a solution.

That’s where Next-Level living begins. It begins when you stop focusing on the problem and start becoming part of the solution.

1. The First Step Is to Change Your Focus

One of the easiest ways to stay stuck is to keep focusing on what used to be. You replay old conversations, old mistakes, old failures, old disappointments, and old versions of yourself. Meanwhile, life keeps moving forward while you’re looking backward.

At some point, you have to take a step back and change your perspective.

Mel Robbins often talks about counting backward—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and then taking action. I like that because it interrupts the pattern. It forces you to stop thinking about what was and start focusing on what is possible.

You cannot create a better future while constantly living in yesterday.

2. Make a Clean Break

Most people aren’t being held back by a physical barrier. They’re being held back by a mental one.

They’re carrying old habits, old beliefs, old fears, old hurts, and old excuses into every new opportunity. They keep revisiting the same problem and wondering why they keep getting the same result.

Make a clean break.

Stop letting that past mistake define you. Stop letting that old habit control you. Stop letting that complaint become your identity. Stop letting that excuse become your reason for standing still.

There comes a point where you must decide that the thing behind you no longer gets to control what’s in front of you.

3. Become the Difference Maker

One of the greatest shifts you can make in life is becoming someone who produces results.

If you can count on anybody, let it be you.

Be the person who gets involved and makes things better. Be the person who looks for answers when everyone else is looking for someone to blame. Be the person who steps forward when everyone else steps back.

When people hear your name, they should think, “They’re going to help us figure this out.”

That’s what solutions do.

That’s what leaders do.

That’s what uncommon people do.

And here’s a hard truth: if you’re not helping create a solution, you’re probably contributing to the problem—or at the very least becoming a distraction that slows down the solution.

4. Problems Are Often a Matter of Perspective

Most people think problems are facts.

The majority of the time, they’re perspectives.

The exact same situation that one person calls a problem, another person calls an opportunity. One person sees an obstacle while another sees a chance to grow. One person sees a setback while another sees preparation for something greater.

That’s why perspective matters so much.

Stop believing that every challenge you face is a problem. It may simply be a solution waiting to present itself. It may be an opportunity disguised as difficulty. It may be the very thing that develops the skills, character, and strength you’ll need for the next level of your life.

5. Every Problem Has a Solution

Read that again.

Every problem has a solution.

That doesn’t mean you’ll always like the answer. It doesn’t mean the answer will be easy. It doesn’t mean the answer will come quickly.

But there is always a path forward.

Someone has solved something similar before. Someone has found a way through. Someone has discovered an answer. Your responsibility is not to convince yourself there is no solution. Your responsibility is to keep looking until you find it.

The moment you stop looking for solutions is the moment you surrender to the problem.

6. Let the Problem Strengthen You

The greatest mistake people make is allowing problems to stop them.

Problems were never designed to stop you.

They were designed to strengthen you.

Every challenge contains a lesson. Every obstacle contains growth. Every setback contains an opportunity to become something more than you were before.

That’s why I love the phrase Welcome the Rain.

Rain looks inconvenient until you realize it’s producing growth.

Problems work the same way.

If you’re interested in growth, you’ll eventually learn to welcome challenges because challenges reveal who you’re becoming.

The Choice Is Yours

At the end of the day, you have a choice.

You can spend your life focused on problems, complaints, excuses, and reasons why something can’t be done.

Or you can become a solution.

You can become the person who finds a way forward.

You can become the person who creates opportunities.

You can become the person who helps others move beyond their obstacles.

The choice is remarkably simple.

You can be the problem.

Or you can be the solution.

The world already has enough people explaining what’s wrong. Become the person who helps make it right.
