Seven Ways To Prepare For A New Year
As we bring 2019 to an end, I’d like to share a few practical ways in which we prepare our family for a new year. A year is an important marker of time and the perfect opportunity to do something different, make improvements, and change something in the life you already have. In what ways can we really prepare for the New Year. After decades of experiencing New Year’s and making New Year’s resolutions, will this be the year that change actually occurs? Well I can guarantee that change won’t come if you continue to repeat the same habits you’ve repeated over the last new years. So then, how will you prepare for this new year?
The Thought or Concept:
What would it take to get off the path you’re on to the path you desire? Is there a secret to having the life you want? Yes. The secret is you have to have a plan that can take you there. Every day you put off planning is one day you put off executing the only thing that can get you to the life you dream of. You must have a game plan for the year if you intend on winning or giving this new year all that you’ve got.
The Practice:
Let me share with you the seven ways we prepare for this new year. Here’s our game plan for preparing.
-
- Take some time off.
Yes, that’s correct you need some time off and time to yourself to decompress from the current years. We need some time to change the flow and get out of the old routine. One day off (to think) is worth 30+days of trying to think while you’re working. Our goal is to have a day away from work at least once every 30 days for this practice. You must separate yourself so that you can think of the possibilities and opportunities that are right in front of you. - Plan a time for some serious prayer and reflection.
Prayer and reflection can go hand in hand. Be thankful for the accomplishments and successes of this year. Be grateful for overcoming the obstacles that you encountered. Include as much gratitude as possible. Every good thing in life starts with gratitude. Without gratitude, we tend to make everything commonplace. I know a guy who makes this statement daily, “my threshold of excitement is low.” In other words, the smallest wins makes him excited. What if you had such an attitude? Low expectations so that everything you gain cause you to be grateful. - Evaluate your year.
Evaluate your year for at least one of these two things: 1) what you did well and 2) what you don’t want to repeat that didn’t go well. You want to take time to evaluate your year like a company evaluates its year. Remember your life is your business. What accomplishments can you say you achieved? What failures occurred that you’d rather not repeat this year? - Get ready for a time of fasting.
Yes, that’s fasting. You know what “fasting” really is. It’s a time designated so that you can detach from everything you’re doing, so that you can cut out the stuff that’s been polluting your life. It’s like a drug addict who’s going into rehab. The goal is to detach from the drug, habit, or practice, so that you are no longer dependent on it and replace it with some new habit of your choosing. This is an important step to make room for the habits, exercises, and practices you need to accomplish your New Year’s game plan for your life, your business. - Review your finances and create a plan to improve it by 1%.
Everyone should review their finances . Your money plays a big part in what options you have for your year. Without reviewing your finances may leave you without the option of accomplishing the plans you make. It’s a sure way to ensure failure when it comes to your game plan. Create a plan to improve your financial disposition by just 1%. After doing this year over year, you’ll see some major progress. Increase your giving by 1%. Reduce your spending by 1%. Increase your savings by 1%. Reduce your debts by 1%. Do something that improves your finances by at least 1%. - Create/update your family plan so that your family has a plan for the new year.
Create or update your family plan so that your family has a plan for the new year. Plan to have a year that’s 10x better than the year you left. Studies say that those who write their plans down have a greater than 90%+ chance of accomplishing their goals than those who don’t. Why wouldn’t you create a plan? Let me say this, only lazy people won’t perform this exercise and if you’re a follower of our content, you’re not in the lazy category. So plan for what you want to see happen in 2020. - Execute immediately.
Don’t put off anything. Act on it now. The game plan is no good if we don’t execute it. My wife says this often, are you starting that now, early? My implied response is…I started it when I said it. There’s no reason to wait until next week to begin losing the ten pounds or saving the $500. Let’s get to it. The sooner we begin, the sooner we can see the desired results.
- Take some time off.
Begin creating your New Year’s game plan. You may not have seven actions to take; when for you all it takes is just one.
